The operation was carried out by the Milan prosecutor’s office on the basis of a European investigation order from the Brussels judiciary
ROME – Searches in the headquarters of the NGO “No Peace Without Justice”, of which the Italian Niccolò Figà-Talamanca is general secretary, and in the home of the treasurer of the association Antonella Casu, in Rome, were carried out by the Milan prosecutor’s office on the basis of a European investigation order from the Brussels judiciary in the context of Qatargate. Antonella Casu was also interrogated assisted by a lawyer.
Figà-Talamanca would be one of the people approached by the Gulf country to promote its image in view of the World Cup and to spread propaganda on Qatari progress in the field of human rights protection.
The searches were carried out by the Guardia di Finanza of Milan and by Belgian investigators in the headquarters of the association which was founded in 1993 by Emma Bonino who resigned after the scandal in which she is not involved came to light. Figà-Talamanca, who suspended himself from the position of secretary general, was instead arrested by Belgium and then released.
On the basis of the European investigation order signed last December by judge Michel Claise, treasurer Casu was also searched, then interrogated with guarantees, therefore with the assistance of a lawyer, as she too is in the crosshairs of the judiciary of Brussels.
Today’s activity is the latest indicated by Belgium to the Milan prosecutor’s office. Meanwhile, a summit between the Milanese and Belgian investigators is expected by the end of the month, the outcome of which could lead to the opening of an independent file in the Lombard capital.
